Cherish your vintage wardrobe: tips for timeless care
Share
Vintage isn't just clothes — it's a little piece of history someone loved before you. Treat it right and your finds will outlast every fast-fashion impulse buy combined. Here's how we keep ours in great shape, including the lesson I learned the absolute hard way.
Storing it
Keep vintage out of direct sunlight and somewhere cool and dry — light fades color and heat breaks down old fibers. Ditch the wire hangers (they leave shoulder dents and rust marks) for padded or wide wooden ones, and skip plastic garment bags. Plastic traps moisture, which means mildew; a breathable cotton cover is the move. And always store things clean — old dirt and body oils set in over time and basically ring the dinner bell for moths.
Washing it (a.k.a. my cautionary tale)
Know your fabric before water ever touches it. I once tossed a gorgeous 1950s wool dress in the wash and pulled out something that would've fit a toddler. Heartbroken. Lesson learned: hand-wash delicate stuff like silk and wool in cool water (or take it to a trusted cleaner), and always test a hidden spot for colorfastness before washing anything with rich dyes. Sturdier cottons can usually handle a gentle cycle — but when in doubt, go slow.
Keeping the bugs out
Moths are the enemy of natural fibers. Tuck cedar blocks or lavender sachets in with your wool and silk, and actually check on your pieces now and then — a quick look beats finding holes later.
The little habits that matter
Spritz perfume and deodorant before you get dressed so they don't stain delicate fabrics. Watch for sharp jewelry that snags. Mend the small stuff — a loose seam, a wobbly button — before it becomes a big problem. And rotate what you wear so no single piece takes all the wear.
Do this and your vintage will keep looking incredible for decades. Which is the whole point: it already made it this far.
