Vintage Thrift Haul: Midcentury Clothes from an Antique Mall (Plus Two $9.99 Designer Finds)

Hi, hello, welcome! We drove to Jackson, Tennessee to see a friend and stopped by the antique mall where JR's buddy 731 Thrift has a booth — and I came home with a pile of handmade 1960s and 70s polyester in real-human sizes (44 to 50 inch busts, people!). Then I hit the thrift store I famously hate and found the deals of the year.

• From 731's booth: a reversible La Jolla Hawaiian shirt, a Morro Bay dandelion-tag dress, a deadstock Mandy plaid with the tiniest duck embroidery, a matching two-piece leisure suit, and an upcycled polyester quilt coat I fully intend to copy.
• A JR bins run turned up two Whiting & Davis mesh bags (one might be worth a real price check), and Tuty sent me a stack of seafarer flares and a kids' JCPenney Big Mac.
• At the thrift store I put on blast: a Laura Ashley that last sold on eBay for $120-something and two Valentino-buttoned Neiman Marcus blazers with shoulder pads like a Tempur-Pedic — every one of them $9.99.
• Also a 20-year personal grail: the Murder by Death shirt I got in trouble for wearing in 10th grade. Not for sale. Ever.
• Most of this will be in an upcoming Whatnot show — tell me what you like and what you don't.

Hi. Hello. Welcome. Do you want to see all the cool stuff I got today? Too bad you're gonna So, here's what we got. We went to Jackson, Tennessee today to visit one of our dear friends. And uh we stopped by an antique mall where one of JR's friends has a booth set up. His name is 731.

and he has an incredible setup. I will probably have an overlay of his space. It's good. It's really good. Um, great selection. Not just vintage, but like a little bit of everything. And I got a little bit of everything vintage. So, obviously this precious little Pocahontas long sleeve. I love it. I'm going to have it for either the kids show on whatnot in a few weeks or uh a pop-up market I'm doing with Casey at Blue Suede. Look at this dress.

1960s. She's got that nice like texture and she's a good size, too. Metal zipper. She looks handmade. Good stitching. Just double checking for brand tags real quick. And this one, did I already say out loud that she is a good size? It's on an easy zipper. No brand tag. Definitely handmade, but I mean this is definitely at least a 44 inch bust. Let's check. 48 inch bust. And there's a few in like great sizes like this. Oh, this one. It's such a sick Hawaiian and it's made inside out like that. Uh, I read somewhere that the men's shirts back in the day were made uh inside out intentionally because the bright fabric was like too girly. So, they would make the cute sides kiss to make it like more masculine, I guess. But honestly, I see this as reversible cuz you've got you got this side and you could button it shut like this. And then you can flip it the other way.

And it's back to light again with your little buttons more visible this time. But so good. So good. And it's um La Holla.

I like this little graphic. I think that's a palm tree. Hello, little palm tree. I don't know why I'm measuring stuff, but this one good size, too. 46 in bust. Then who do we have? I don't know this brand. It's Mororrow Bay Limited. Let me know if you've heard of them. I love this dandelion tag. And this is like a textured polyester and just a good I would say late 60s, early 70s. The colors are so much better than they look on screen. One day I'm going to get really nice lights for you guys. I promise. Oh. Uhoh. [clears throat] Oh, there's an earthquake. I got a lot of stuff. Okay. I lost all of this. By the way, every bit of this I'm showing you came from that same booth, from that same person, 731 Thrift. Okay, this one gives me like Shining vibes. The pattern's obviously different, but similar. It's a little bit devilish. I like that about it. The inside is reverse, and it just says hand washer, dry clean. I don't think I saw any brand tags. Talon zipper. Let's look at her inside out.

No, no taggies. She is a mystery. She is a sneaky little mystery.

Okay, let's get you back together, honey bunches. Oh, I didn't even notice how the sides were. [sighs] Oh, that's fun. Wait a minute. Is it Is there a pattern in this? Are there skulls or something? No. It kind of looked like it for a second though, right? Like plays tricks on your eyes. It does look like skulls. Okay, that's kind of tripping me out. We're going to put that aside for now. this darling. Like what a precious little cardigan. She's got a couple little stains. I'll get them out. I can't even explain to you this material. It's almost like a terry cloth, but the inside is much softer. I think she could probably use a good conditioning. Uh oh, it's Devon. What's up, girl? There's a little man in a horse. Hey, little guy. You [ __ ] hot, baby. I love it. Who's next? We got the pockets. [singing]

The colors, the pattern. I mean, you already know she's that sick ass polyester. This is like a dark chocolate brown. We do. Speaking of chocolate, looks like maybe a little chocolate snack right there. Uh, we'll get her cleaned up. She'll be fantastic again. [sighs and gasps] I do love her. This one made me particularly happy. I now that I'm holding it up to me, I think I think she might be too small, but I got her hoping to keep her and not sell her.

Who made you Betty Hartford? Look at Betty's sweet little name. That font is so good. Oxy best for her. Maybe I can stretch her out a little. This dreamy baby. Okay. Okay. I saw this from across the damn antique mall and kind of jogged. It is the most beautiful pastel gorgeous dress and in a powerful size no less. Let's see here. We got 25 pit to pit. That's a 50 inch bust. What do you What do you do waist wise? 24 up to a 48 inch waist. It's so hard to find good vintage in sizes for real human bodies. And we did it. And if that wasn't enough, shazam, kablam. [clears throat] Look at that. Look at that. And the collar. Do you see the little little So good. So freaking good. And again, nice generous size for real humans. 27 pit to pit. Fantastic. Ah, these are all so good. I will have them all available in an upcoming whatnot show. Um, I have one scheduled tomorrow, but I doubt that these will be so fresh and so clean clean by then. Tomorrow being Monday, Labor Day, congratulations on your labor. Uh, so I can maybe have these there if you happen to see this beforehand or if you're watching the super sped up version on Instagram or Facebook. This one looks like little masks to me. Like you kind of see like the Deadpool or the Spider-Man in there. And this one also good powerful size. Polyester metal zipper. She's that like nice knit poly. Uh definitely appears to be handmade. No brand tags on her. So many chef kisses. Oh, I forgot about this one. Look at her. Behold.

Look at the pattern. She's the most gorgeous. Yellow and blue. Handmade. Did you see how beautiful this is? I bet you did. Also a great size. I love her. I love her. I love those colors. This one is so darling. Oh, look. She has It says Chelsea Industries. That's the um

the fabric company. Wow, I really lost my words there. Probably because I was so stunned by this stunner. Oh, she's got a little bit of a seam rip here. that happens when people use cotton thread on not necessarily on polyester garments but just cotton thread in general because it will start to decompose and the poly is still great all it just it just needs some new thread and that's why I use 100% polyester thread by Singer that's not true I am a Singer affiliate but I use whatever [ __ ] thread I have and It is polyester almost always. This dress at first seems a little more basic than what I would normally grab. Just, you know, plaid. A nice plaid, but plaid. And also, oh yeah, she's dead stuck. Mandy, like the movie. This is why I grabbed her. She's this tiny little duck embroidery. She is made by Mandy, as we mentioned, in the USA. And uh oh, she has her little matching belt. Just a darling little darling. A darling little darling. You can tell I'm at a loss for words. Got a couple stains on her. Some little schmutz that'll need to get cleaned up, but I will cuz I have restoration. I'm going to save that one for last. this two-piece freaking set. I mean, first the top. It's NY. It's textured. It's ribbed for your pleasure. It's so [ __ ] sick. And then the matching pants, your very own leisure suit. Um, the pants are kind of wide, but not necessarily huge flares. It is polyester. I'm trying to get a tag size for you and I'm failing. It is storebought, but for whatever reason, there is no tag in the top and only this care tag in the bottom. But uh I love it. It feels really nice. I wish you could feel it. Just try. Use your imagination. Be brave. [clears throat] Okay. And the last thing that I got from him today,

[clears throat] I got a coat of many colors. It's so freaking good. And also, it's just like 3/4 sleeves, which I'm kind of obsessed with. This is like a polyester quilt that was upcycled. I really appreciate that they lined it with like nylon. That's a nice touch. I should consider doing that on my quilt jackets and stuff. Like line them with bed sheets. How darling would that be? Oh, that'll make them cost more. It'll be okay. It'll be worth it. And I definitely want to copy this pattern cuz I love it. There's no buttons, just a whole lot of cuteness. Um, some other things that I got recently that are not from our boy are uh these adorable like Whiting and Davis little bags. Jr. picked these up from the bins for me. Pretty cute. This one Whiting and Davis. Uh, maybe like 80s 90s. I haven't cleaned it yet. And it still has Nana's lozenes in there. Then we got this little guy. I think it's called chain mail. I might be wrong about that. This one is Oh, this one's older. This one's a nice old Whiting in Davis. I might actually need to run a little price check on this one. Some of these go for kind of crazy. Some of them go for like nothing. Like this might be five or 10 bucks, but some are insane. [cough] [clears throat] Uh oh, I also recently got this hat. It's very silly, but I like it. I'm going to use it to help me [laughter] figure out a hat pattern for this fashion show I'm doing because, well, I don't want to tell you. You'll find out when you find out. Uh, my friend Sudie, that's her name for real, got this sweater for me and it has these cute little puff sleeves. I don't I think maybe this came from 2D2. JR came home with it all. some sick ass vintage seafares. It's always my favorite when they have their name on them. And obviously these do. Seafares are my very favorite. If you have any my size, let me know. Uh Tutti, I think it's all came from my chair. Pretty sure this came from Tudi. Also, it is ridiculous and 80s and fantastic. Uh like kind of denim. This guy, it's a Big Mac and it's a small size. I love the '7s JC Penney Big Macs. This one is a size 112. So, kids. Yeah, kids. I can't. This is too much. Then, what else did I get recently? Oh, you've seen this stack, I think. Yeah, you've seen these two cuz they came from New York. You haven't seen this house coat that my sweetheart brought home. Y'all know I love me some 60s house coats and vanity. Really any anything that looks like this because this is how grandma ended up with like 14 kids. And it's how you can ensure a healthy and happy sex life of your own as consenting adults. Children, cover your ears and turn back time. Okay. And then [laughter] I'm sorry. Uh, what else do I have for you? Oh,

I went thrifting yesterday for the first time in a minute. Well, for the first time since I got back from New York. And that was the But New York was the first time I had thrifted in like kind of a few weeks. So, give me a break. I'm an addict. I went to the thrift store that I hate. The one that I put on blast. I don't even Which one should I start with? I'll start with the red one. I went in there cuz I needed I needed a thrift fix. I knew they were going to piss me off. It was mad, mad, mad, mad. And then I saw this. And if you know, you know,

you know. It was $9.99 and I could not contain an audible squeal. I in fact I have footage that I plan to post, but J.R. asked me to hold off before putting it on like Instagram because that's where that's where the ops are. We're gatekeeping. We're gatekeeping is what we're doing cuz I have to wait a week. But [sighs] I found this. I lost my mind. And then 5 minutes later, I found this one. This dress just a little boring. Navy blue basic. I think my friends over here will remember Laura Ashley. Okay. 9.99. This one last sold this exact same dress. Last sold on eBay for $120 something. Not what's listed right now. Like what's sold. So at this point, I no longer hate the thrift store. I am amped to be in that thrift store. And Jr said, we can spend 30 minutes and I know it's pushing an hour at this point and he is being so patient because he is a saint. And I was like, honey, I just know I know if there's one here, there's going to be another one. I just I can feel it. And then what do I grab?

I grab this one. Now, you may recognize these buttons. You may know who she is. Also, $9.99. The same store that was selling $50 Kiss T-shirts had these guys for 10 bucks a pop. I like the blue one more, I'm not going to lie, but the red one is Valentino red, which makes it more desirable for some reason. They're like the nicest quality. I haven't even told you about these insane shoulder pads. They're so thick. They're like a tempropedic bed. They're like a 1980s menstrual pad. They are intense. It's like linen. [clears throat] Still has the Nean Marcus little tag inside. Utterly obsessed. I really want to go back and run the rack one more time. I'm checking the pockets right now just to make sure they didn't leave me any thousand bills. Uh, but tomorrow they're having a Labor Day sale and you would not be able to catch me dead in there tomorrow for Labor Day. I'm not going to fight people at the thrift store. Like, that's just not my vibe. Let me just finish filling up these pockets. Making sure there's no money hiding in here for me. Nothing there. Is there any money in this one? Nothing there. I just realized I was grabbing in the wrong place on these. Hey, don't judge me because one time I did find money in pockets. Uh, I captured it on video and I was amped. I pulled out a lot of cash. A lot of ones. It was $6. Best day of my life. Oh, this I forgot about you. This adorable little wrap skirt. It's casual corner like 90s but 100% silk and the most lovely patterns. And then I grabbed this one because at that point I was just on a roll and I couldn't be stopped. Country sophisticates. She was just five bucks and she's real cute. She looks like this. And that's it thriftwise. I also you guys are going to think this is disgusting. Okay. But I had this shirt when I was in 10th grade and I got in trouble because it was too gross. The school didn't like it. Uh the one I had was significantly smaller because I only wore youth sizes then because I don't know cuz I was a teenager. It's what we did. Uh and I have looked for this shirt ever since I lost mine for probably 20 years. I've emailed the band and been like, "Do you guys have this shirt?" and they're like, "No, we don't even have the art file." And finally, I posted in a different forum and this guy had it and he sold it to me and he's like not even a reseller, but he was like, "Yeah, I'll sell it, too." He gave it to me for like 30 bucks. So, I'm really excited about this. It's like personal grail. Not going to get sold. I have a huge collection of shirts by this band, Murder by Death. They are really good and they don't sound like their name, so check them out. It's like uh I don't know, space cowboy punk folk music. It's good. So, okay. In conclusion, I'm having a crazy hair day. I went to Jackson. I went vintage shopping. Yesterday, I went thrifting. I had some other things to show you and I did. Monday, Labor Day will be live on whatnot at some point.
